Obtaining Public Records in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. County public land records are at Office of Tax and Revenue. To search records users must register for a free account. Searches can be done by lot/square, grantor/grantee, document number, date/document type and roll/frame. Documents are referenced from June 6, 1936 until the present.

In addition to land records, the Office of Public Records Management, Archival Administration, and Library of Government Information also have valuable sources for research. These repositories hold a wide array of documents that include administrative, architectural, engineering, fiscal, genealogical, historical, and legal records. Research information is available from the website at Office of Secretary.




The District of Columbia Archives holds historical and valuable records of the Washington D.C. Government. These records include birth and deaths, wills, land records, and marriage records. This is a good source of genealogy information. The records are not available for viewing online at this time but a request for the archived records can be made through the Office of Secretary website. The Archive staff will research the information and email the results back to the researcher.

Washington D.C. County office is located at 1300 Naylor Court, NW Naylor Court is a U-shaped alley in the block bounded by 9th, 10th, N, and O Streets NW, just two blocks north of the Walter A. Washington Convention Center. Research hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
